MORE ABOUT THE CHARACTERISTICS OF LA MORENA BEANS

In Guatemala, the coffee sector has long been a male-dominated industry, and gender equality remains a challenge that unfortunately still makes it very difficult for women in Guatemala to compete and succeed in the coffee world.

La Morena is a coffee that highlights the work of women farmers throughout Guatemala. Their goal is to create an exclusive product produced by women.

In 2015, they started with 22 women farmers from Huehuetenango who contributed to a batch of 30 bags.

93 women farmers have now produced this coffee crop and harvested 2,900 bags. They have expanded their reach to the Cubulco region by creating traceable community batches of farmers participating in their Volcafe Way program.

The women farmers were first identified through regional coffee competitions where they were introduced to the work of Volcafe Way. This allowed the local team to learn about the different qualities available and the women who produce them.

The model farm method is preferred, where producers using best practices or advised by their agronomists become trainers themselves and present their work to the local community.

Workshops can be organized with the support of the local team, and knowledge is shared with other participants in the program. The work focuses on quality and yield improvement, farm management, pest control, and improving market knowledge and financial literacy.

Everyone works together: Women farmers participating in Volcafe Way receive technical assistance and business training. This leads to improved quality and increased yields.

In addition to their work in coffee, they seek to address the challenges of rural income generation more broadly through their collaboration with the organization Wakami.

Wakami works with more than 500 members in eight different regions, training rural women in finance, accounting and market access. A two-year training program gives members enough time to make changes in the first year and refine them in the second, with the goal of developing long-term sustainable income generation strategies.

Fifteen cents per pound of La Morena coffee is donated to Wakami - that's just over $22 per bag. By purchasing La Morena coffee, you are putting the work of women coffee farmers front and center and investing in the future of sustainable small farms in rural Guatemala.
